Lesson plan focus: Summarizing using TBLT by Shannon Pederson.
Date: Nov. 29th, 2024.
Course: 480P Second Language Pedagogy: Task-Based Language Teaching with Nicole Ziegler.
Description: A lesson plan I developed for a class centered around Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT). This was my first time designing a task-based syllabus, and I felt inspired to create a lesson that would appeal to my classmates back when I attended high school in Korea; thus, this unit is designed for intermediate speakers of English in a Korean public school. This project has greatly improved my understanding of TBLT, along with the similarities (and differences!) it shares with Project-Based Learning. I am fond of TBLT's emphasis on student-oriented activities that utilize needs analyses, collaboration, and motivation techniques. Lesson plan focus: Teaching Kazakh Vowels by Shannon Pederson.
Date: Dec. 4th, 2024.
Course: SLS 303 Second Language Teaching with Dr. Graham Crookes ("Survey of methodology; basic concepts and practices; emphasis on teaching second languages through oral instruction.")
Description: A lesson plan I developed for a microteaching activity in which I taught my peers how to interpret and pronounce Kazakh vowels. This project allowed me to gain practical teaching experience for a difficult topic of novice speakers of the target language, along with practice creating engaging class activities and materials. Now that I have much more experience with Kazakh, I'd love to get another shot at teaching this kind of lesson—maybe one day! If you're interested in reading a more casual reflection I wrote about this experience, you can check it out here. Finally, all the materials I made, including a hand-designed handout, can be viewed on my class materials page. (8 pages, click image to view pdf in new tab.)

Date: Dec. 12th, 2022.
Course: SLS 304 Sociolinguistics of Multilingualism with Professor Ha Nguyen.
Description: A lesson plan I developed for a hypothetical unit designed to challenge ideas of native-speakerism in South Korean schools, along with ways to raise awareness of the existence and importance of World Englishes. While full handouts and slides have not been prepared for this lesson plan, detailed descriptions of suggested content and sources are provided, along with some visual examples of the handout and YouTube source material can be seen below. Lesson plan focus: Information-gap task: How's the weather? by Shannon Pederson.
Date: Feb. 14th, 2025.
Description: A lesson plan and activity I developed for the Korean Flagship Program's tutoring program, which was created for Korean Flagship students to gain conversational speaking practice and individualize instruction. This task was a fun exercise in improving my skills in designing TBLT lesson plans and materials. It was designed to engage students in an information-gap style activity that's interesting yet not overwhelming with new information.
I especially had fun making the custom handout for this lesson plan, which is available for free by clicking on the images below or checking out my class materials page! I hope to continue improving my design skills in the future by creating many more tasks, as this creative aspect might just be my favorite part of creating a TBLT lesson plan.
